OVERVIEW
The Green Scholarship Program is a division of the Charity Development of Los Cabos and is a 501(c) not-for-profit organization serving as an advocate for young people with the greatest need. In addition, the Program has been granted the Mexican A.C. Donataria status. The Program assists minority youths granting four-year scholarships for higher education. A 100% of all donations go directly to pay the scholars tuition.
The Green Scholarship Program provides its scholars with much more than financial support; it also provides leadership skills to form active community members.
The Green Scholarship Program believes in providing opportunities through education to empower the economically challenged to improve their quality of life and economic circumstances.
HISTORY
In the summer of 2006, Cecilia Portilla de Avalos, acting Green Scholarship Program Director, was approached by a member of the community with the fear that Issac Góngora, a very bright and gifted student could not afford to go to college because his family did not have the economic means to support his dream. Issac was well known in the community as an excellent student and a leader. He deserved to fulfill his dream of obtaining a college education.
The Green Scholarship Program Founders, Pat and Art Pratt, have called Cabo San Lucas their second home for over five years and thoroughly enjoy its beauty and people. They wanted nothing more than to give back and improve the Los Cabos community. Cecilia shared Issac's story with the Pratt's and without any hesitation they agreed to pay his college tuition.
Issac was the first Green Scholarship Program Scholar (GSP). Soon many students came seeking help in obtaining their dreams. The clear need in the community encouraged the founders and director to formalize a program and start the GSP to serve the Los Cabos scholars in need of opportunities. The GSP was born as a division of the Charity Development of Los Cabos. Due to the efforts of Inés Avalos, GSP Director 2007-2008, by 2007, GSP had eight scholars and in 2008 the number grew to 22. The number continues to grow thanks to the generous donations and contribution of GSP friends. We are happy to sponsor over 40 students in 2009 and have the goal to keep growing each year and expand our program to other places in Mexico.
MISSION STATEMENT
